Home > Natural Stone - Travertine Travertine tile is a natural material that has unique features that no other stone can offer. Travertine can be used for floors, countertops, vanities and walls. The distinctive design of Travertine creates some of the most distinguished floor tiles available. Travertine is ideal for commercial and residential use. It is popular for exterior use when it is cut to a honed or tumbled finish. Travertine countertops, travertine vanities, and travertine tile are natural surfaces that are millions of years old. Travertine is quarried from where water once was. The holes in travertine developed as sulphur bubbles ate through the stone and left openings throughout the material. These holes are often left unfilled or they are filled with an epoxy. Travertine is quarried from all over the world and its unique layered appearance provides patterns that cannot be matched anywhere. It is classified as both a sedimentary and metamorphic stone. It is usually quarried in earth-tone colors; however, there are many types of travertines available and each one has its own uniqueness. Some of the minerals provide cream colored patterns and other travertine’s can be found in red or brown. Furthermore, there are travertine’s that will provide higher glosses than others and there are some that will not polish up at all. Travertine is geared more for interior use. It is especially popular for flooring and bathroom use. Polished travertine is not recommended for exterior use to its sensitivity to acid rain and abrasive debris. When fabricated, most travertine’s can be cut to a high polished luster; however, there are many that will not polish at all. For vanities, almost every type of edge design can be carved into the stone. Tumble travertine is also a very popular finish. It provides an antique type appearance that looks wonderful on floors, walls and backsplashes. For cleaning, always use a product specifically designed to clean natural stone, not over-the-counter cleaning products. Periodically, we recommend using a stone polish on your marble countertop and shower walls, which will enhance to dark colors of your stone.
